De-Clutter and Help Others at the Same Time!!

Good IdeaGuest writes "The following Idea was passed along to me by my friend Kelly in Canada.  What a wonderful idea she has and a great way to look at the situation.  Often we can make a situation either good or bad depending on the way we look at it and Kelly certainly turned this situation into a Good Deed.

From Kelly:

Thought I would share an idea for the New Year with the Do Something Good Day members.  With all the oganization related New Years resolutions, a lot of people - me included, are decluttering.  I know a family who has a very reduced income right now, thanks to the single parent Dad going back to school.  They were living with a small tv and very little storage space in the living room.  We gave them our tv stand and that big old tv - which works perfect but was being stored after we switched to a flat screen.  I actually considered throwing it away, thinking that it would be insulting to offer it to someone.  I am glad now that I did not.

After that I cleaned out my closets and bagged up all the clothes that were taking up space and not being worn - there were lots!!  All of that went to the Salvation Army.  The extra space in my home has made a positive difference in my life and my discarded items are living a new life somewhere else.

I just want to remind those getting ready for their own house cleaning rituals that the Salvation Army and other charity organizations can really use a lot of what we consider clutter.

In my years as a single parent, more than once, people stepped forward to help me and I am grateful.  I want to be able to "pay it forward" so to speak.

I let my buddy know that he was doing me a favour by accepting the tv and stand.  It helped me de-clutter and I felt good knowing it wasn't being wasted.

THANKS KELLY for sharing with all our members and we encourage anyone else with an idea for a Good Deed to share and help inspire others.

 Guitar Give Plays On

Spread The WordGuest writes "
I am not the doer of this Good Deed, but was fortunate enough to learn about it and I feel compelled to share it.
There is a North American company called Dean, that makes guitars. They recently hosted a get together for a group, called the Dean Owners of America or DOA. At DOA 2008 there was a raffle for a couple of their new guitars. One of the guitars was won by a gentleman who was a Dean guitar owner already. Surprisingly, he turned around and just gave the guitar, worth about $1,000.00, to a young boy about 12 years old standing nearby. The boy and his family were thrilled and overjoyed. The giver was so touched by the results of what had just transpired that he left momentarily to regain his composure. The joy of the giving was as much a gift to the giver as to the receiver.

This to me is the essence of Do Something Good Day. It is not the size or value of the gift that is the focus, but the selflessness of the action itself and the impact that such an action can have on others.
